“You
chose competence over chaos, results over excuses and a city government that
finally works for you.”

Mayor: Her Historic Election, First woman mayor Miami
As the
year 2025 is going to bid farewell, Miami voters already chose their new political
resolutions. This time they privileged democracy over republic. Miami under
republican leadership for decades, subscribed to a leadership style rooted in
transparency and community engagement. Eileen Higgins’ election marks a
historic moment for Miami, as she becomes the city’s first woman mayor
and the first Democrat to hold the office in nearly three decades in Miami Mayor
Election, 2025. Higgins, a former county commissioner, defeated Republican
Emilio González, an ex-city manager who had the endorsement of President Trump.
Miami is going to experience the goodness of
democracy after thriving under republican rules. Also, the win carries symbolic
weight, breaking a long-standing gender barrier in a major American city.
Her
Background and Rise in Public Service
In a
post-election interview on CBS News, Chief Washington Correspondent Major
Garrett asked Higgins about the so-called "Trump effect," referencing
President Trump’s endorsement of her Republican opponent and the heightened
attention it brought to the race.
To “Trump
effect”, Higgins responded that, “I don't know. What I know is what I did. I
worked. I knocked on doors and called Republicans, independents and Democrats
all across the city of Miami — because you cannot become the mayor of this city
if only Democrats vote for you. You can't become the mayor of this city if only
Republicans vote for you. You've got to have all three."

Eileen

using these properties for housing purposes.
Miami
housing crisis
"I
said, 'What's on that property? What can be on that property? Let's build
housing when it's appropriate.' And I have already opened thousands of units of
affordable housing, sometimes low income seniors, sometimes working
families."
How Eileen
Higgins won mayor
According
to Higgins, people believed in her years of experience. She thinks that people
voted to her working experiences. To her professional community service, Higgins
adds that "But when I get elected, the election's over, and the time of
service begins, and you serve everybody. Never, ever ask their political
affiliation. If their street is flooded, if they need an affordable unit to
live in, you don't ask what party they're from. You say, 'Yep, we've got to
figure out how to make that happen for you.'"

Higgins
also pointed out local issues, especially President Trump’ crazy obsession with
immigration rules. People feared to speak out loud their problems in public.
Instead, they chose to whisper their dilemmas in Eileen’s ears:
"Folks will whisper in my ear —
it's always a whisper, they're afraid," she said. "'They took my
brother. I don't know what happened to my uncle.' Sometimes it's Alligator
Alcatraz. Sometimes they have no idea where their relatives are. That's not the
way it's supposed to be in America."
