All About National Football League (NFL): Structure, Season Format & Rules Explained


What is NFL?

NFL stands for National Football League which is the op professional American football league in the It is one of the most watched sports leagues in the world in United States. It can be compared for cricket enthusiasts to that of IPL in cricket.

 


Structure of NFL

NFL consists of total 32 teams that are divided into conferences. The teams are usually divided into 2 conferences: AFC (American Football Conference) and NFC (National Football Conference). Now , each conference is further divided into 4 divisions (North, South, East, West).

NFL Season Format

The NFL season is divided into three major phases: Regular season, Playoffs and Super Bowl.

Regular Season

Each team plays 17 games and they try to qualify for the playoffs based on their performance in regular season phase. Standings determine division winners and wild-card entries.

Playoffs

The top teams from each conference make their way to playoffs. The matches are of knockout style. The games cater to high pressure and wide media coverage.Fans glue to their television screens to experience their favourite teams journey.

Super Bowl

Every football enthusiast wait patiently for super bowl games to watch their favourite players playing on the grandest stage. Super Bowl is the final championship game. It decides the NFL champion. The Quarterback (QB) is the most important and influential player on the team. The quarterback:

  • Leads the offensive plays
  • Throws the ball to receivers
  • Makes strategic decisions during the game
  • Often becomes the public face of the team
